Solar Warranties in Cape Town: What's Covered?

Every solar quote mentions warranties, but the numbers on the page don't always tell you who fixes what, or how. A solar and battery system is made up of several parts, and each one carries its own warranty from a different company. Here's how it works for the systems we install in Cape Town and Gauteng, and what to check before you sign.

Four Warranties, Not One

A typical home system has four layers of cover: the solar panels, the inverter and battery, the mounting on your roof, and the installer's workmanship. The first two come from the manufacturer, the last two from your installer. A long product warranty is only as useful as the company standing behind it, and the installer who helps you claim on it.

Solar Panels: Product vs Performance

Panel warranties come in two parts. The product warranty covers defects in the panel itself. The performance warranty promises the panel will keep producing close to its rated output as it ages. Tesla Powerwall 3

Tesla Powerwall 3 combines an 11 kW inverter and a 15 kWh battery (13.5 kWh usable) in one unit, and it carries a 10-year warranty. It is also warranted for outdoor installation. Tesla publishes the full terms in its Powerwall warranty for South Africa, which is worth reading for its conditions. The Tesla Wall Connector for EV charging has a 4-year warranty. Sigenergy Inverters and Batteries

The Sigenergy hybrid inverter and its 6, 8 and 9 kWh battery modules each carry a 10-year warranty, and the Sigen EV AC Charger has a 3-year warranty. Sigenergy's South African warranty documents are linked on our Sigenergy page.

Swap-Out, Not Repair

With both Tesla and Sigenergy, a faulty unit is replaced with a new one rather than repaired on site. For a homeowner that means less time without power and no patched-up equipment on your wall.

Mounting and Leaks

The mounting that holds your panels to the roof is where a poor installation shows up first, usually as a leak. Our mounting is matched to your roof type, carries a 10-year warranty, and leaks are covered by our warranty. Read more in our solar panel mounting guide.

Workmanship and Support

Every MLT installation comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty covering call-outs, online and phone support, and leak fixes, and we carry over R20 million in public liability insurance. Just as important, the photo above shows the kind of detail that warranties depend on: equipment installed to the manufacturer's requirements, with the right certificates. Every system includes SSEG council approval, an Electrical Certificate of Compliance and engineer sign-off where required.

Keeping Your Warranty Valid

Use an installer certified by the manufacturer, such as a Tesla Premium Installer or Sigenergy Certified Installer.
Keep your quote, invoice, Certificate of Compliance and commissioning documents together.
Keep your system connected to Wi-Fi so the monitoring app can report faults.
Don't let anyone else open or rewire the equipment.
