Tesla Powerwall 3 vs Sigenergy: Which Is Right for Your Cape Town Home?

Tesla Powerwall 3 installed by MLT Power on a tiled wall in a Cape Town home

"Should I go Tesla or Sigenergy?" is one of the questions we hear most. MLT Power installs both, as a Tesla Premium Installer and a Sigenergy Certified Installer, so we can give you a straight answer: both are premium systems, and the right one depends on your home and how you want it to grow.

What the Two Have in Common

Both systems come with a swap-out warranty, so a faulty unit is replaced with a new one rather than repaired. Both batteries have passed rigorous fire safety tests (UL 9540A), both are warranted for outdoor installation, and both are ready for electric vehicle charging. Each comes with its own app, so you can watch your solar, battery and grid use live, and we can support your system remotely.

Tesla Powerwall 3: Simple, All-in-One Whole-Home Backup

The Tesla Powerwall 3 combines the battery and inverter in one unit, with 11 kW of power for whole-home backup. It's outdoor rated (IP67) and made in the USA. The Tesla Backup Gateway switches your home over instantly when the grid goes down.

Need more storage later? The Powerwall 3 Expansion adds 13.5 kWh per unit, with up to three per Powerwall 3, and it fits beside your Powerwall. Pair it with the Tesla Wall Connector (11.5 kW AC charging) and you can charge your car from your own solar, all managed in the Tesla app, including Storm Watch outage preparation.

Our installed Tesla home packages start from R180–220k including VAT, installation, certification and council registration.

Sigenergy: Modular and Flexible

Sigenergy is built around stackable 6 or 8 kWh LFP battery modules, so you can start small and add storage as your needs grow. The hybrid inverter sits on top of the battery, comes in 10–30 kW in single or three-phase, and has 4–6 MPPTs to make the most of roofs facing different directions. The mySigen app uses AI energy management, and the Sigen EV AC Charger offers 7, 11 or 22 kW charging.

Our installed Sigenergy home packages start from R100–125k including VAT, installation, certification and council registration, which makes it a strong choice for smaller homes or tighter budgets.

So Which Should You Choose?

As a rough guide:

  • Choose Tesla Powerwall 3 if you want a simple, all-in-one system with whole-home backup, a seamless app and the full Tesla ecosystem, from the Expansion pack to the Wall Connector.
  • Choose Sigenergy if you want to start with a smaller system and add modules over time, need three-phase or a larger inverter, or have a complex roof that benefits from more MPPTs.

The best way to decide is to look at your actual electricity use. We size every home solar system to your bills, roof and backup needs, and we offer solar finance if you'd rather spread the cost.
